Pfizer Commissions Distribution Hub for East Africa in Nairobi

Nairobi 19th July 2011 –

Pfizer, The world’s largest research-based pharmaceutical company, today commissioned the distribution hub for East Africa which will be based in Nairobi, Kenya.

Making the announcement, Country Director for Nigeria, and the East Africa region Mr. Enrico Liggeri said “the opening of the distribution hub in Nairobi is part of Pfizer’s commitment to making its products more accessible while ensuring consumers get the right quality products Pfizer is known worldwide for”, adding that the hub would serve as a legitimate supply system of products, bringing them closer to the market and reducing the total accumulated cost per product.

Pfizer in partnership with Pharmaceutical Health Distributors (PHD) set up the hub earlier in the year as a response to the growing needs to ensure stable supply, secure and ultimately cheaper Pfizer products in the East African Region.

Mr. Enrico also said that the hub will to a large extent help manage counterfeit and accountability challenges which the company has been grappling with in the region.

Pfizer has so far invested close to 500,000 Thousand Dollars in the setting up of systems to ensure the workability of the Hub. Pfizer has made significant social investments in Kenya and East Africa, key of these programs include the Diflucan Partnership commissioned in 2000 to improve the quality of life for people living with HIV and AIDS.

Pfizer and its partners distribute millions of Diflucan (Fluconazole) treatments for two AIDS related fungal infections in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. The total cost to date is USD 1.2 billion.

Other programs include anti-malaria campaigns, financial support for the Eldoret Academic Model Providing Access to Health (AMPATH) and donation of Growth Hormone Medication (Genotropin) to Gertrude Children’s Hospital Nairobi.

The Associate Director for Public Affairs and Communication, Maggie Olele, who was also at the event said, “This launch presents the platform to showcase Pfizer’s dedication towards improving economic growth through various corporate responsibility activities in Kenya and its regions as well as highlighting Pfizer’s commitment to using Kenya as a major trade hub for doing business”.

Pfizer Laboratories Kenya Limited is the sub regional office of Pfizer in East Africa and part of the Pfizer NEAR market territory comprising of 10 countries including Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda, Angola, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Eritea and Somalia.

Pfizer’s operation in Kenya began over half a century ago and has served variously as a regional office for Africa and the Middle East as well as an office for Central and East Africa.

Key stakeholders in the regulatory logistics and supplies of Pfizer product also attended the event including key representatives of the Kenya Pharmacy and Poisons Board, The Kenya Anti-Counterfeit Agency, The Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya, The Kenya Manufacturers Association amongst others.
