Plans by listed retailer Uchumi Supermarket to sell one of its iconic branches -Langata road , has hit a snag.

The firm had in October announced that it would sell the hypermarket as part of its fundraising to return to profitability.

However, the Kenyan Airports Authority has said the retailer cannot and will not sell the said facility.

The land, KAA says is part of Wilson Airport.  It is registered as LR.No.209/12593, off Lang’ata Road.

“Uchumi Supermarkets Limited,  who purports to own the land is trying to sell,  lease or deal in one way or another with the percel of land….Kenya Airports does not and will not recognise any transaction entered without its written authorisation or consent in respect to the property. ” the authority says in a notice.

The sale of this facility and the Ngong road unit was part of the wider strategy to dispose of non revenue generating assets of the retailer. The deal, Uchumi had indicated was to be on a ”sale and lease back’.wpid-20151119_125542.jpg
